HGC Construction, has begun a complete renovation along with an addition to the historic Walnut Hills High School located in Cincinnati’s Walnut Hills neighborhood. HGC, which has a well-earned reputation for its renovation work in Ohio and Kentucky, won the competitive contract for the $27.7 million renovation and addition project.

The original Walnut Hills High School was built it 1895 and was located at Ashland and Burdett. In 1931, the current high school was built on 14-acres along Victory Parkway. The front of the high school was inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s designs at the University of Virginia and modeled after the university’s library building. This included the iconic domed library at the center of the structure. Cincinnati’s Rookwood Pottery can also be found throughout the high school.

The first addition to the school was built in 1960 and added a one-story annex that included classrooms and laboratory space. Next was an addition built in 1976 which added the Fine Arts Complex. In 1998, the one-story annex was demolished and replaced with a new Arts & Science Center.

The renovation of the high school will include a complete interior demolition and renovation that will be completed in eight phases. Construction also includes an addition that will be completed in the first phase of construction. The school, which will remain occupied during construction, will include walls and partitions, floors, ceilings, casework and specialties. Portions of the project will be funded by Walnut Hills Alumni Association.

The project is scheduled to be completed in August 2014 and will pursue LEED accreditation.

The architect for the project is SHP Leading Design.
