“Repurposing” for Sustainability and Savings

The Mercantile Library

One of the oldest cultural institutions in the Midwest—The Mercantile Library—has undergone a complete renovation to improve its functionality, yet maintain its historic character. HGC Construction renovated the library, introducing new features, while keeping the Library as “green” as possible through new technologies and reuse of existing material.

With its urban construction experience, HGC was able to introduce large structural steel elements needed to build the Library’s new mezzanine, workstations and exhibit area. To accomplish this, Walnut street was closed between Fourth & Fifth streets to traffic and a crane lifted and gently inserted steel through an open 11th-floor window.
Historic Preservation

HGC is the regions expert when is comes to the repairs and restoration of historic landmarks. Again, our full spectrum of construction expertise is brought to these projects. For example, our work might include new roofing, insertion of steel columns or construction of other structural elements, masonry, carpentry, window restoration, installation of state-of-the-art plumbing and heating and cooling systems, interior finishes, restoration of historic murals, replication of ornate interior and façade details, and other work, depending on the needs and intended future use of the structure.
